Volunteer Administrator/Receptionist

Deafway

Deafway’s history can be traced back to the late 1800’s through two other organisations – The Royal Cross School for the Deaf and The North and East Lancashire Welfare Association for the Deaf (NELWAD). Both of these organisations were established in Preston in the 1890’s, one providing formal education for Deaf children and young adults and the other meeting the social needs of the local Deaf adult community. The School and NELWAD were registered charities in their own rights and the current organisation was formed by the merger of these two charities into one new charity in 1990. Initially the new organisation was named The Mary Cross Trust however, in 2003, this was changed to Deafway which better reflects who we are and what we do.

Today Deafway is one of the leading charities in the North West of England, Supporting adults who are D/deaf, deafened or hard of hearing with additional needs.

Deafway works locally, nationally and internationally to achieve equality of access and opportunity for D/deaf people in all areas of life.  Our services and projects include:

Residential Care & Rehabilitation for Deaf people with a range of needs

  • Community services for Deaf people, hard of hearing people and people with additional needs and their families.
  • Supported living projects
  • Promotion of social justice issues
  • Partnerships & Projects with Deaf organisations in Nepal & Uganda

Finally, we will work in partnership with other organisations to create new services tailored to specific needs in all parts of the UK.

Deafway celebrates diversity in our organisation and in society as a  whole and is an equal opportunities employer welcoming all people with a positive view of age, caring responsibilities, gender, disability racial origin, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic background.
