Are you a fully qualified BSL Interpreter? Do you love to travel and enjoy working flexibly? Do you want to make a real difference volunteering your skills?
Deafway’s Uganda Marathon Team needs you!
The Uganda Marathon is not just a race, but a 7 day immersive cultural adventure on the Equator. Described as “The best week of my life” by 1 out of 5 #UGM2016 participants, this unique event brings people from around the world to rural Uganda to work with local projects, stage a sports day and a football tournament, take part in a celebration of Ugandan culture, a festival, a party, performance, music, art and at the end of it all: a 10k, half or full marathon.
Deafway is a registered charity and our team will be running in support of St Anthony’s School for Deaf Children in Nkose. You’ll get the chance to visit the school and meet the children all your hard work will be helping. We are looking for 1 volunteer interpreter per every 4 Deaf participants – up to a maximum of 2 interpreters so you’ll need to be confident and assertive as you might be working on your own at times in a totally new environment!
Deafway will pay for your visa entry and safari tent accommodation, all your food for the whole week, airport transfers, race entry, a race t-shirt, a handmade medal and a local sim card. Deafway will also give you a £250 contribution towards your flights (flights are available for sub £450 from most places in Europe). However, you’ll need to arrange and pay for your inoculations and travel insurance.
You’ll be able to take part in a 10k, half marathon or full marathon, on condition that you are contactable and that if any of our Deaf participants require emergency assistance (i.e. they need medical care) you agree to stop running and interpret for them.
In 2016, after 100,000 members of the public voted, the Uganda International Marathon beat the Boston, New York, Athens, Chicago, Berlin, Dublin, Singapore marathons and more to be crowned Best International Event at the 2016 UK Running Awards!
This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a world changing event, to join a team of people wanting to make a difference and to gain experience interpreting in an international context. If you are interested in this opportunity please contact Christina.firstname.lastname@example.org, please send your CV or Linkedin profile url and a short email explaining why you’d like to take part.
Depending on the level of interest we will shortlist applicants for these volunteer positions based on relevant experience, commitment and enthusiasm, we may also ask for up to two references.
Please note you must be available from the 31st May – 6th June 2017.
